Difficult achievements

Today I did three tasks in my supported go outside hour, two appointment making things and one go to Boots for masks.
All my masks expired all in the same week even though I bought them far apart so I needed all new ones and Boots is the one place that seems to actually have them.

... that takes very little writing down but Maximum doing. I had to go speak to people at desks. People at desks are difficult tasks even when they are very kind and helpful.

So after that I got home and declared Out Of Spoons and All Done for the day, but I still only got four hours sleep so hopefully I'll get back to sleep at some point before I have to call it Tuesday.

This morning I started watching Titans https://hmv.com/store/film-tv/blu-ray/titans-the-complete-first-season , which I didn't watch when it was new due to suspicion I would not like it, and as it turns out I was correct. Read more... ) And I could keep going but presumably some people like it so I shall not.

I do not suspect I shall like it more if I watch it more but I'm going to give it a whole season because I own it.

Blah.

... I still have the tag Television for this sort of thing even though I don't watch it as broadcast television. Now I'm thinking what a new tag can be. Episodic visual storytelling doesn't exactly have a ring to it.

Also I have about two lines of the Loathing song from Wicked stuck in my head and may have to resort to catchier songs to get rid of it. Record stuck much.

But today Got Things Done, so that's a pretty good day.

Write Every Day September 2025 - Day 1 and Introduction

It's that time again — for me to pop unexpectedly to say "I aten't dead" — and to host a month of Write Every Day. *Waves*

What is Write Every Day (or as we affectionately type it to save typing, WED?)

Once again copied from previous stints as host:

Write Every Day is an informal writing challenge that moves from journal to journal, hosted by different people instead of on a central comm. It's probably a weird way of doing things, but that's how it's set up and — it's worked so far!

I'm hosting it this month. Every day I'll make a post where people can check in to comment on what they've written that day, whether a single sentence or thousands of words; or to talk about problems, ask questions, and generally cheer each other on.

There are no sign-ups. Anyone is welcome to join at any time. Just comment and voila! You have joined.

What counts as "writing" is fairly relaxed, and can include working on research, plotting, RPG text, free-writing, and the ever-useful "alibi sentence," which is what it sounds like, a single sentence written primarily to count as writing for that day.

The goal is to write every day, but it's not required. A tally is kept of everyone's daily writing check-in, but it's to help people stay on track. It isn't a race.

The challenge is meant to help each other develop a consistent writing habit, keep procrastination at bay, get through difficult times, overcome writer's block, and to just keep at it.

If you want more information, read [personal profile] zwei_hexen's, ([personal profile] ysilme and [personal profile] sylvanwitch) Welcome to Write Every Day! which goes into the rules (mostly guidelines) in more depth.

Goals & Plans for the Month

If you have any special goals or plans for the month, feel free to share them! My only plan for the month is to write every day. ;-)

Quote of the Day:

"When you aren’t inspired to work on whatever it is you should be working on, do an exercise, or a series of them. Make up your own exercises. Do them even if you feel dull and unimaginative. Something may come of it, and it is better than doing nothing."

Sherlock Holmes: Tea, Coffee, and a Bite of Beef by MadamzelleG

Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (Books/Granada)
Pairings/Characters: Holmes/Watson
Rating: G
Length: 1114 words
Creator Links: MadamzelleG
Theme: food & cooking

Summary: Holmes never orders dinner for himself, but Watson has long since stopped asking why. Instead, he allows the quiet ritual to unfold—Holmes sipping his coffee, stealing a bite here and there from Watson’s plate with effortless precision. In the warm glow of the Café Royal, amidst the murmur of conversation and the clink of silverware, an unspoken understanding lingers between them: Holmes takes, and Watson never minds.

Reccer's Notes: An intimate little scene of Watson and Holmes dining out together. With some exploration of Holmes' canon issues around food, but not in clinical way, more like Watson observing Holmes.

Round 178: Food & Cooking

Photograph of steel spoons and spices in a dramatic setting with added text that gives it the look of a gourmet magazine cover: September 2025. Food & Cooking, at Fancake. Steel teaspoons are arranged in an elogated oval to suggest a fish, with the bowls acting as scales and some of the handles left visible to create the fins and tail, giving the creature a spiky appearance. The concave bowls are dusted with a powdery orange spice for color and one spoon at the front of the fish is filled with a coarse black spice to create an eye. The fish is on a black surface with a rough texture and around it are three skinny green peppers, a mound of salt, a mound of orange spice, and a dipping bowl filled with a clear amber liquid.
Our theme for September is food & cooking!

The tag for this round is: theme: food & cooking

If you're just joining us, be sure to check out our policy on content notes. Content notes aren't required, but they're nice to include in your recs, especially if a fanwork has untagged content that readers may wish to know about in advance. Because food can be a sensitive subject, you might want to indicate things like disordered eating, food allergies, dieting, weight loss or gain, food policing, fatphobia, and body shaming.

Guardian Bonus Bingo September Prompts

A new month is upon us and that means it’s time for new bonus bingo prompts!

September (G) Prompts:

Hands | Midnight | Good Fortune

You only need to create for one of these prompts to earn a fill for this month, though you’re welcome to create more if you feel so inspired.

Are you new to the fest or have you missed some of the previous prompts? No worries! We love having new people join in and you can post any missed fills in our November grace period month.

While the fest account is located on Tumblr, you don't have to be a Tumblr user to participate or to earn a badge at the end of the fest. (Filling one prompt per month over five months is what matters for earning the badge, not where you post your fills.)

Friendly Fest Reminders:

  • This is a low-stress fest. The point is to create fan works and have fun.
  • All modes of creation are accepted!
  • All ratings, all ships, rpf, Weilan derivatives, and even works based on other Priest novels are accepted. Please tag accordingly.
  • Three prompts per month instead of one. This is to give people more options. You only need to create for one prompt to earn a fill. (You are, however, welcome to complete or combine all of them if you’d like.)
  • Prompts are inspiration only – follow them as strictly or as loosely as you’d like
  • No min/max content requirements.
  • No works created using generative AI

About/FAQ - Contains full fest info

AO3 Collection - You may also post in other places (tumblr, Dreamwidth, etc.)

If you @ our tumblr account, we’ll happily reblog your fill.

Let us know if you have any questions. We are so excited to see what you'll create in August!

Fest Prompt Master List:

June (B): Chase | Door Key | Respite

July (I): Cake | Reconciliation | Emergency

August (N): Incoming Call | Free Space | Festival

September (G): Hands | Midnight | Good Fortune

Code deploy happening shortly

Per the [site community profile] dw_news post regarding the MS/TN blocks, we are doing a small code push shortly in order to get the code live. As per usual, please let us know if you see anything wonky.

There is some code cleanup we've been doing that is going out with this push but I don't think there is any new/reworked functionality, so it should be pretty invisible if all goes well.

Okay, okay.

I have failed to keep up as much as I like/planned, but to be fair, I've been a little busy. I ended up working two days this week (beyond the meeting I had) because they needed help, so I stuffed envelopes like crazy. Fortunately, I am a very good envelope stuffer and stuff-putter-together-er. The past four days have been hockey!hockey!hockey! sort of. I mean, there have been hockey games, but since none of the other volunteers felt like doing the work, it kind of fell to me. I've done my fill of eating out lately though, because groups tend to want to do that.

Still the weekend went well, and by bb!hockeys are adorable, and the training came was filled with baby bb!hockeys. These people were born in 2010. TWO THOUSAND TEN. That makes absolutely no sense at all. They are INFANTS.

School is finished-finished. I turned in the very last assignment just now, and so I'm done. Should get my degree in a little less than a month, and yes please. Will I go on for more schooling? Probably not, but never say never. (I'm saying never). Possibly I will take random classes on line just for fun. Not for a while though. I have a lot of things I need to work on just in life-life without taking that on right now.

Tomorrow is going to see Jordan Klepper, Tuesday is school with the sixth graders and meeting the kids I'm going to spend most of my time working with, and then Wednesday is all the kids, and I'm already tired. I'm going to have to get back on some sort of schedule. Blech.

I'm trying a new exercise program this week. We'll see how it goes. I need to tone/firm up my arms because they are batwings, and I would like them not to be. Anyway. Life continues to be life, which I guess means it's doing its job.

August fanworks round-up post!

This is the fanworks round-up post for August! Please link in the comments to any Guardian (or related fandoms) fanworks you created or enjoyed last month.
  • all kinds of fanworks are welcome – fic, art, vids, picspams, etc. - including those made for exchanges and events
  • new chapters of WIPs count
  • meta or discussion posts, too
  • whether or not you've already linked these in a post of their own, we still want them here!

If you're linking to fanworks you didn't create yourself, please clearly mark these "REC", so there's no confusion about authorship/creatorship.

(And please still do link your fanworks, meta, etc. separately, in their own post, at any time!)

So ... what Guardian and related fandoms works did you create or enjoy in August?

On a Tuesday night, Bruce Wayne attends a circus. Halfway through, the trapeze artists are killed, leaving their eight year old son behind, hands wrapped in dancer’s tape and knees bloody with how he falls on them in his anguish. Bruce Wayne watches him for a moment, two, then turns around and leaves.

Sixteen years later, the thing who was once a man named Dick Grayson nurses a bottle of scotch as he stitches the gaping wound in his side from where Batman got him with a batarang.

The Pieces of What's Left by [archiveofourown.org profile] mynameisjessejk
When Blockbuster burns down his whole life and Tarantula takes what isn't hers to claim, Dick ditches his life, his name, and his city for an anonymous, quiet life in the Bowery. Just till he can put himself back together.

Jason is doing his best to fix his corner of the city, keep Black Mask out of his business, and arrange a confrontation with Batman, the Joker, and all the water under the bridge. He has no idea what to do with a Dick Grayson who's apparently in hiding and joined his gang by accident.

But it turns out they need each other far more than they could have imagined, and if either of them are going to fix their broken pieces, it's going to have to be together.
I enjoyed this! #hoods and birds

Stephanie Brown is many things: a vigilante, a gossip, an ally, a ragebaiter, and a friend. But when a blizzard knocks out her apartment's WiFi, she tacks on another label to that list - an uninvited houseguest. And uninvited guests are often most welcome when they leave. Hilarious!

Red Hood's Shelter for Feral Kids by [archiveofourown.org profile] dandelionlily
Jason has a plan for his return to Gotham. Steal the clown's old Red Hood identity? Check. Make sure meddling birds know to keep out of his territory? Check. Recruit some homeless youth to keep an ear to the street in exchange for shelter? Check. Take over the Crime Alley drug trade, convince Black Mask to break the clown out of Arkham, murder his Replacement and force Batman to finally avenge him? ...he's still working on it.

His plans are delayed when the homeless kids he's sheltering are joined by a fearful boy with hand-shaped bruises around his neck. Alvin Draper may not want to say who did it, but Red Hood isn't about to let anyone who beats up children go unpunished.
This is fun!

Mississippi site block, plus a small restriction on Tennessee new accounts

A reminder to everyone that starting tomorrow, we are being forced to block access to any IP address that geolocates to the state of Mississippi for legal reasons while we and Netchoice continue fighting the law in court. People whose IP addresses geolocate to Mississippi will only be able to access a page that explains the issue and lets them know that we'll be back to offer them service as soon as the legal risk to us is less existential.

The block page will include the apology but I'll repeat it here: we don't do geolocation ourselves, so we're limited to the geolocation ability of our network provider. Our anti-spam geolocation blocks have shown us that their geolocation database has a number of mistakes in it. If one of your friends who doesn't live in Mississippi gets the block message, there is nothing we can do on our end to adjust the block, because we don't control it. The only way to fix a mistaken block is to change your IP address to one that doesn't register as being in Mississippi, either by disconnecting your internet connection and reconnecting it (if you don't have a static IP address) or using a VPN.

In related news, the judge in our challenge to Tennessee's social media age verification, parental consent, and parental surveillance law (which we are also part of the fight against!) ruled last month that we had not met the threshold for a temporary injunction preventing the state from enforcing the law while the court case proceeds.

The Tennesee law is less onerous than the Mississippi law and the fines for violating it are slightly less ruinous (slightly), but it's still a risk to us. While the fight goes on, we've decided to prevent any new account signups from anyone under 18 in Tennessee to protect ourselves against risk. We do not need to block access from the whole state: this only applies to new account creation.

Because we don't do any geolocation on our users and our network provider's geolocation services only apply to blocking access to the site entirely, the way we're implementing this is a new mandatory question on the account creation form asking if you live in Tennessee. If you do, you'll be unable to register an account if you're under 18, not just the under 13 restriction mandated by COPPA. Like the restrictions on the state of Mississippi, we absolutely hate having to do this, we're sorry, and we hope we'll be able to undo it as soon as possible.

Finally, I'd like to thank every one of you who's commented with a message of support for this fight or who's bought paid time to help keep us running. The fact we're entirely user-supported and you all genuinely understand why this fight is so important for everyone is a huge part of why we can continue to do this work. I've also sent a lot of your comments to the lawyers who are fighting the actual battles in court, and they find your wholehearted support just as encouraging and motivating as I do. Thank you all once again for being the best users any social media site could ever hope for. You make me proud and even more determined to yell at state attorneys general on your behalf.
