A friend of mine who writes archiving software for academic publications has offered to create an automated fiction archive for the Highlander fandom. He thinks it would be a good test of his software and is open to discussing what exactly would be required from the archive and attempting to fill all our requirements.
I have already stipulated that it would need to be easy and simple to use, have the ability for authors to upload, alter and remove their own stories and a good search facility. This is apparently all very easy. He has also kindly offered to host the archive free of charge on a .org or .net registered name for us. He suggested www.watcher-archives.org as apparently its still available! He will also fix/maintain the archive but would want some people to play general overseers as a first line of contact.
I was of course delighted with the idea but thought it best to get this idea out there and hear people's views. I would be grateful if anyon who would be interested in being involved would post a response. I would like this to be something the whole fandom has an input into. If you would like to be a maintainer, let me know. If you have any views on what type of archive and what type of features it would need please post and again let me know.
Please post this to any mailing lists or draw it to the attention of anyone who would be interested. I don't propose that this archive replaces Seventh Dimension simply provide another completely automated facility.
One idea I did have was to set up an RSS feed to this LJ so that everytime someone posts a story to the archive you get notification here.
Anyway. That's what's on the table people. What do you think? Discuss.
