The books don't have the black humor. The show really plays up Tara, who doesn't appear in the books until like, book three. And she's not at all like she is in the show. But each book is a mystery, and once you get past the first book, which is always awkward, you kind of hit a stride. Sookie's voice gets better as the books go along, and I find southern colloquialism charming, and she doesn't lay it on thick. Oh, and there's lots of vampire sex. And some other sex.
I hate Bill, BTW. Eric FTW. Oooh! Pam FTW! I hope they show her in her regular clothes.
I read this whole series over the last year, and - though not amazing - the books are very entertaining. Though tweaked a bit from the book, I'm really LOVING the TV series. It has more dark comic bits then the book. And, Tara! As of the end of episode 4, Tara is officially my favorite character on TV right now. Yes, Captn Jack is up there normally, but Torchwood's on hiatus for the moment. :P In the books, Tara is white and a very minor character, but she SO rocks in the TV show.
I have to catch the newest episode on demand this week, but yeah. It's the first tv series that's really drawn me in, in a number of years. Not sure if I'm into it enough to call it a "fandom" yet, but it's certainly got me waiting for each week avidly (and wishing I had it all sitting ready on DVD at this point to devour in one good weekend viewing session!)
