And onward with the Master & Commander recs. Its rather nostalgic for me to have an excuse to *squeee* over an incarnation of Russell Crowe in slash fic again. *sighs happily*
Just a quick note about my recs. I rec fic because I have enjoyed the particular story and/or something in the story has caught my imagination. This means my recs are completely subjective and I am well aware that they may not be to everyone's taste. If you are not keen on *me* then your highly likely not to enjoy my taste in fics.
So, like, why are you reading this?
Okay. Good. Glad we cleared that up then.
Well inevitably, when talking about the Master & Commander fandom, I am going to have to throw myself at the feet of of the awesome
astolat and worship. All her M & C fic is breathtaking and really I can only point you at her webpage and say go read. I must admit that I particularly adore her Five Things That Never Happenned Three: All The Wonder which is an AU in space. Infact the whole of that series is gorgeous.
The other two fics of hers which stick in the mind are Preservation mainly because of the sepia overtones. I read the Aubrey/Maturin books some years ago now but I do remember the darker aspect of Maturin's character and this is highlighted to great effect in this short. The other is the gloriously indulgent The Undiscovered Ocean which is has a plot straight out of the '101 Storylines for Slash Fanfic' and I just adore it!
As an aside I have to say that
astolat wrote one of my favourite first time Methos/Duncan stories. If you haven't read Begin Again then you are in for a treat. Bring a towel though..
*slaps self* Okay back to M & C recs. Next I have to pay homage to wonder that is Keiko and the delightful three part Prizes Over Discovery. This is tightly written, hot and evocative. I can *hear* her Stephen and Jack and they are just edible!
I also found another of her stories in the rather wonderfully named Salty Seamen Archive. Its called The Captain's Options and has a lovely, dry sense of humour running through it which somehow makes the relationship between Jack and Stephen that more real and poignant.
The whole archive is worth plundering at your leisure but I'd particularly recommend the following treasures:
Jack In The Pulpit by the ever reliable AZARAD who also, I must add writes damn fine Sharpe fic. Not many writers can create the correct historical ambiance and flavour so effortlessly in their writing. Its a talent AZARAD has in spades which cannot be bettered by many. Oh, and the sex is hot too!
In Disgrace With Fortune by Newfyjohn which is a bitingly beautiful bit of writing. I do like my ever so slightly slightly soiled Stephen! And;
Shilo's bittersweet Never in Life Heartrending!
To finish up I'm going to rec some shorts that really sparked my interest and made me spangle. Nesting Place by the dazzling
destina and Undertow by the marvelous
marzilla were both written for the While We Tell Of Yuletide Treasure Contest. They are both iridescent gems of a very different kind but, each is equally as brilliant and evocative in its own way, as the other. To say more would spoil them.
To finish I must recommend to your eyes the particularly perfect
pun's aptly titled Following Orders
Read, enjoy and don't forget to feedback the authors.
Tomorrow many list members descend upon me for a positive orgy of all things Peter Wingfield. See you on the flip side!
