Yours truly is having a foul day! I have far too much work and no time. While a small part of me is delighted that so many people think I'm great at what I do, the rest of me is now completely and utterly narked that I have just had five, yes, five sodding new instructions in the last 24 hours!

Argh!

This of course means I may well be a bit quiet on the fandom front. So without further ado some quick recs to keep you all smiling.

First up is some new offerings from the delightfully different Jay Tryfanstone an author who I am incredibly conflicted about. On the one hand I absolutely adore her lush, velvety prose and her ability to conjure images in your mind. On the other, I find the notes she tends to add to her stories unnecessary and massively detracting from her stories. *shrugs*

In any event, Jay has two new fics up on her website. True North/Out Of Kilter is a delightfully arch and sparkly bit of writing. The incident at the toilets in particular is extremely well observed and had me laughing out loud. Those of you who have a kink for Methos' hands will *definitely* enjoy this fic!

The other fic is called Stuck In The Moment and was written for the Lyric Wheel Challenge. This is an author described meta-fic and I will be honest and say that I'm not normally keen on this style of fic at all. I was however, completely won over by the shining genius of the following lines: "I want you naked." Duncan says, and watches Methos' eyes darken. "I want to be so far inside you it feels like I'm fucking your throat through your arse. I want you to scream my name when you come."

I would be very very interested in seeing what Jay could come up with for a kink fic. She would appear to have all the necessary reference points at her fingertips to write something that would sear your eyeballs! *grins and waggles eyebrows*

Next is a rec for the delightful and tantalizing Tessa Rae who's recent entries into the HLCrossroads challenge have been now been placed on the web for everyone to enjoy. The Constancy Of Weeds caught me at a weak moment when I first read it and the resulting sniffle attack meant I had to see my next client with smudged eyeliner. Its also, given the fact that I'm English, lead to some rather unfortunate mental imagery involving Methos dressed as a flower and the following very poor joke:

Methos: "Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed"
Duncan: [muffled]"Flobb-dobb, Ickle Weed"
Methos: [breathlessly} If you loved me, you'd swallow.

*facepalms* If Bill and Ben The Flowerpot Men mean nothing to you, neither will that joke okay!

Tessa's other entry for the same Challenge is White Paper in which Duncan has my job. Well kind of. The story itself has all the hallmarks of a perfect Tessa story, great dialogue, great characterisation and great plot. Fave line:"
If you comment about the size of my nose from that angle, I'm hanging up.."

Then of course there is the magnificence and shiny wonderfulness that is my sextalicious [personal profile] lastrega's entry for the same HLCrossroads Challenge. Its called Caritas and it made even I, with my morbid fear of wedding rings go *Awww!*. As usual the prose is elegant and restrained, Methos' paranoia is sketched in delicate pencil strokes and the entire fic is a glinting silver sparkle of a thing.

...I may also be developing a kink for Flustered!Methos.

That's the Highlander recs. I'd also like to draw your attention to some particularly fabulous Queen Of Swords slash fic. Queen of Swords is a now defunct TV series which featured the drooltastic Mr Peter Wingfield and the equally edible Mr Valentine Pelka. For those of you haven't been paying attention, that's Methos and Kronos from Highlander.

It also featured a black clad, thigh boot and corset wearing, whip wielding, masked and extremely lickable heroine. *gurgle*

Mr Wingfield's character was called Dr Helm and Mr Pelka's character was called Colonel Montoya, needless to say they were *so* doing it! Go here if you wish to learn a bit more about the series and drool over some lovely pics. If you want to read some *quality* codpiece ripping QOS fanfic then look no further then the brilliant [profile] beccaabbott's epic Ravished and the equally dramatic follow up Shanghaied. These fics are long, *full* of Dr Helm abuse and just utterly fabulous. Word on the LJ is that she is writing a third part to this series and that it's to be called Mourningwood. I heartily recommend that everyone go and pester her to finish this as soon as possible! *grins*

If you've not read any of [profile] beccaabbott's fic before then you are missing a serious kink treat. Her HL fics The Weekend Series, The Helot Series and Forsaken are so good I have them printed out at home in case I require a kink!fic fix and can't get to a computer. *grins*

Other QOS fics of particular genius are Lisa Weston and [profile] cupcakemlpota's Acquired Taste Series which is so witty and so clever I wanted to marry it.

These two authors are the definite *stars* of this small fandom. I would also rec [profile] cupcakemlpota's short dark and devastating HL/QOS crossover which starts with Out Of The Frying Pan and concludes with Into The Fire, as well as Lisa Weston's gloriously funny QOS/Queer Eye For The Straight Guy (yes you read that correctly) crossover It Takes A Village, People which is just pure *class* with a capital C!

My final recs are all by the grovel-at-her-feet-she's-amazing [profile] 3jane. The first is a crossover. Its Harry Potter/Hellblazer, its called Break His Fall and its quite simply one of the best fics I have read for a while. Jane has a knack of creating atmospheres full of erotic tension and such darkness that I can't decide whether I'm terrified or turned on. This idea behind this fic is brilliant, so brilliant infact that you are left wondering why on earth *you* hadn't thought of it. It does however require a certain familiarity with the Hellblazer comics.

The other two recs are Witchcraft When Your Eyes which is BtVS and so darkly nasty that it nearly *squicked* me, plus the gloriously dirty Border Men which was co-written with [profile] thete1 and is a BtVS/Hellblazer crossover.

Anyways, enjoy and don't forget to feedback the authors

Another Jane St. Claire rec -- "Shimmer" (Andromeda). One of the few Harper-centric stories I've enjoyed; one of the very few Andromeda stories written with exceptional style.

and absolutely, Becca Abbott's QoS; and and, for Tryfanstone, I like the notes.

Re:

I'm a huge Jane and Becca fan so anything by them is usually worth reading :)

As far as Jay's notes. That is only my opinion. I can understand that many people like them. I just don't :)

John Constantine *swoon* he's one of the few comic book characters that I have a Methos sized kink for. Border Men was one of the very first slash I ever read. Good times. I second that rec.

Constantine!

Oh tell me about it. Constantine is one of my all time fave comic characters, he and Methos would be so great...the sarcasm levels would go off the scale. I'd love to see them slashed well *grins*

I can't believe they have cast Keanu Reeves as Constantine and set the film in America. Its a fucking travesty and I have a feeling the film is going to make me want to poke my eyes out with forks..

Tim Roth would have made a superb Constantine! *sighs*

Re: Constantine!

NO no no no NOONONON NONONO!!!! not Keanu Reeves! *waaaagh!*

I want Sean Bean, he could pull off being Constantine. Keanu Reeves is just so wrong. Set in the states.. fair enough, he does travel around alot.

Oooo Id love to see Constantine and Methos slashed, preferably as a one night stand for them where neither knows who the other is, they're both suspecting that the other has something to hide/is more powerful than they show but neither finds out. (what no, that sort of stuff is not one of my biggest kinks when it comes to fics)

Re: Constantine!

Actually Sean would be cool too..technically Constantine is from Liverpool so he should have a scouse accent. I can just about forgive them setting it in America but not making him american. He's just such a *classic* english character...*sighs*

I agree about your kink actually. I also love it when your get the undercurrent of dark and deadly and no on is quite sure whether they are good or not. Its one of the reasons I adore Methos and Constantine. Like you I'm also a huge Giles fan because he's very similar and why I adore Ethan too. I suppose Wesley has too it too on a smaller scale. I only really like Angel when he's evil, but Spike is just wonderful and getting even more so in Season 5 :) His accent has improved tremendously!

Oooh if you haven't read Break His Fall yet then you are in for a big treat :)

Actually (and you'll get this) you know the epsiode of Buffy where Wesley turns up with other watchers to catch Faith, Giles is also there and they are all sitting round a table in some scruffy cafe discussing how they will catch her? Well I had this really vivid vision of Constantine walking in at that point, wearing his long coat, smoking a fag and saying "Alright you wankers, what's going on?"

*shakes head*

It just seemed appropriate

From: [identity profile] crowie.livejournal.com

Re: Constantine!

Wesley has it too but on a smaller scale? No Wesley has heaps of it but on a slightly different scale (the way I see him atleast)

I actually posted about this in my journal yesterday. Take a peek if you havent already.

Just 'cos Im a mad Wesley fangirl Im gonna blabber on a bit. What really really gets me going with Wes is that I can see him do evil evil things but still thinking he's doing it in the name of good. The concept of someone doing horrible things in the name of good, and sincerely believing that they're doing it for good is just yummy.

With the scene where the other watchers came in. I also had a flash of Constantine walking in. Heeee! :D Great minds think alike eh?

I like Angel with a soul, especially when his inner Angelus shines through. I actually get a bigger kick out of Angel with a soul being very very dark than I get out of Angelus (I mean Angelus is oh so yummy) but when it slips through that Angel with a soul can be just as bad or a part of him wants it, I go week at the knees.

Re: Constantine!

I needs go post on your LJ :)

I can see what you mean about Angel and I must admit I am growing more fond of him as I watch more Angel. I couldn't bear him in Buffy however, so I have a hangover from that I guess.

Am so with you though on this kink. There is just nothing sexier then someone with power (of any kind) who restrains it and then every now and then you get flashes of 'teh Evil' shining through. Angel does do that well. Methos even better, the dojo fight scene in Chivalry in particular, he starts off Adam and then flips into Methos..so sexy! :) I think the King of that type of thing is Giles, mainly because its so very unexpected in him. It always makes me *Squeee* like a mad thing when you get those 'Ripper' moments.

I like Wesley and I can see what you mean but I never see him as seriously frightening...not as much as say Angelus or Giles can be or Spike. I think the fact he thinks he's doing good is very sexy though and he's so obviously heavily into kinky sex as well *grins* I think my main problem with Wesley is that the actor played the coward wjho ran off with Sharpe's wife in Sharpe and I can't get that character out of my head sometimes when I watch Wesley :)

You have seen Sharpe yes?

Its good to know that someone else saw Constantine in that scene :( Oooh and GIP...I had to go find some icons.

From: [identity profile] crowie.livejournal.com

Re: Constantine!

Ofcourse Ive seen Sharpe, Channel 1 in Reykjavik showed him all the time. I havent seen any for years though. Oh and I get that with having actors stuck in a role in your head. I have a hard time seenig PW in anything and not seeing Methos.. (that is very easy though because Methos creates roles for himself all the time)

But yeah Ripper... mmmm and it was -SO- unexpected. One of my bunnies is to have Adam Pierson and Giles meet and then have flashes of Methos and Ripper. Squeee... *drool*

It's so fun though when you find someone else that shares your fic!kinks. *bounces around*

and you nailed the description of it here: "There is just nothing sexier then someone with power (of any kind) who restrains it and then every now and then you get flashes of 'teh Evil' shining through."

You actually even have a bit of that with Jack Sparrow, he's the drunk!loony!pirate, but occasionally a rather sharp mind who's so much more lucid than everybody thinks shines through.

and such a pretty icon, Constantine...

Yes subtle as brick, that's me :) Seriously you have no idea how pleased I was to see your writing a third part to that series.

By the way, have you *seen* the pics of Peter Wingfield from his new Bliss epiosode? *grins*

Alas, no. I've never even heard of Bliss until just lately. Is it true? PW in bondage? (can I be so lucky?)

Thanks. It took me awhile to come up with a suitably melodramatic plot, but I think I have it now. We'll see.... :-)

You've opened the door to my own fangirl squeeing when it comes to Lisa Weston. *G*

When you've finished "It takes a Village, People" do yourself a favour and click on the link back to the Archive Index. I have all of her QoS stuff up there. How can you want to miss stories that start with lines like this:
The problem with reading pornography in a foreign language, Marcus Grisham sighed to himself, was the way the body's response had to wait upon the mind's translation.

But then so do you darling. When are you gonna be finished tinkering with your QOS/HL crossover cos I'd like to read the revised versions :)

From: [identity profile] gnu57.livejournal.com

Stuck in the Moment is absolutely...

one of those fics that I find myself reading with mouth hanging open. Jay T. has such a gift that I absolutely want to weep everytime I read her words. No matter the subject. No matter the approach taken. I wasn't even sure I'd fathomed what a "meta-fic" was (one of your infamously inside words, Em) but once I started reading it I think I got the concept sufficiently. This story is probably one of the best I've read that pulls the reader into it. LITERALLY, I had my nose practically pressed on the monitor, as though if I got close enough I'd be able to see between the little bits of colored light into the darkened interior of the bar. Then I bumped my head. LOL

I think I'll go curl up in a corner now and chant to myself.
