Just so you all know, I'm off to New York tomorrow. I'll be back on Monday 5th September. Emile and her husband Chris are meeting me and The Ex out in New York. Chris is going to watch some tennis tournament while I reassure myself that Emilie has survived the radiation treatment for breast cancer. I am seriously in need of a break so cannot wait, plus this will be my first proper stay in New York.

I arrive Tuesday 30th August at 4.10pm and am staying in a studio apt at 160 Bleecker St in Greenwich Village. I shall have the mobile with me so if anyone wants to drop by and say 'Hi' that would be very spangly!

For all those kind people who said nice things when I was wibbling about Flynn, my cat, you will be delighted to know that he is doing fine, much as you predicted. He does not appear to miss the six teeth they took out and his eating well and back to being his usual swashbuckling self. He has, now, finally forgiven me for the whole vet nightmare as well.

I really appreciated all the kind words people had to say about this so thanks! I will at some point get round to answering all your comments individually.

As for my horse, long story short, he is improving. For those of you who don't know I am owned by a demon of the third hell cleverly disguised as a cantankerous 14hh grey New Forest Pony. His name is Misty and he is 22. I have had him since he was 2 yrs old and during our long and colourful relationship, he is has broken my nose twice, my wrist once, many of my toes on various occasions and given me a 3 day stay in hospital with concussion.

He is also, possibly the closest thing I shall ever have to a child and certainly the most sustained, rewarding and successful relationship I have had with any male.

You can probably skip the next 5 paragraphs or so if your not particularly horsey. This is mainly for [livejournal.com profile] lia_van_helsing who I gifted/cursed with a virtual half ownership of Misty some years ago when she had to sell her beloved Battle Mare.

Unfortunately these days, Misty is pretty much retired as I have little to no time to ride and less desire to risk life and limb. Last year he developed laminitis for the first time. Since then we have restricted his grazing and kept a close eye on his weight. All seemed fine, but then 3 weeks ago I was rung up by Lucie, the lady who takes care of him for me and told, he was hopping lame. I assumed, as did she, that he'd picked up a puncture wound of some kind, nothing serious and then called the vet. The vet diagnosed him with chronic laminitis and we had to stable him with pressure pads on his front feet and then *hope* we had caught it in time before his pedal bones rotated.

The vet then informed me that it was highly likely that Misty had Cushings Disease. A neurological syndrome which affects older horses, particularly native breeds. This disease has laminitis as one of it's many symptoms. Its a terminal disease but there are ways of treating it to make life comfortable. That was *if* we could get the laminitis under control.

So I had the great conversation with the vet where he asked me whether Misty was "in or out of the food chain" i.e was I going to send him for meat if he had to be put down. All very cheery stuff, not helped by the fact that said vet thought that mentioning I could get £400 for a pony of his size would somehow alter my opinion. This was closely followed by a cheerful comment while treating Misty about "how he wasn't going to be kebabs then..".

Said vet is still alive but only because Lucie stepped in between me and him at the crucial point.

Anyway. After three days of hell and some x-rays, it was confirmed that the pedal bones in Misty's front feet are actually okay and have hardly rotated at all. The vet does however discover that Misty also has a whopping great abscess in one of his front feet. Funnily enough Lucie has said she thought that might be the problem and that the laminitis was a traumatic response set up in the other feet by him being so lame in one foot. The abscess has now burst out in two points from his coronet band and while he is still hopping lame, he is getting better.

I've located a herbal compound for treatment of the Cushings and hopefully once he is sound again we should be able to get him back out in the field and start monitoring his progress. It's not an all clear and the best I can hope for with the Cushings is another 4-5 years before it becomes untreatable. Still it's better then nothing and at least I get to have him with me, without his quality of life being unduly altered, for a little while longer.

Work still sucks but I have two job offers and am considering my options.

I am thinking of all the people in the path of the hurricane, I loved New Orleans when I visited and I hope it isn't too stomped upon. Equally, I hope all of you there and in the surrounding areas take care and come through in one piece.

That's all for now. See you guys on the flip side.
