What truly sucks is not having to be fair to people we despise, but watching people bully someone else with impunity - *whoever* is doing it. Jeylan is not the only bigot, or wind bag or stupid person in HL fandom. She's not the only person with a stupidly skewed vision of Methos either. I've seen many people on many lists in different fandoms get up and state in boring, repetitive detail what they demand from stories too. No one seems to get their panties in a bunch about that.
Granted, she's a particularly offensive and stupid creature. I just don't think she's that extraordinary that all even handedness had to be ditched - but it has been. In this saga I have seen Jane Carnall, Taz, Em, Diane and several others launch outright personal attacks on Jeylan (or in Jane's case on someone else in a related thread) on two separate lists. I have not seen any of these people banned or even admonished on list. I *have* seen Jeylan repeatedly attacked, guillotined and flamed. This is not fair play. It's no defence to say she's a prat because that's the same defence the mad bitch who used to run ODM used to come up with. It's no defence to say that so and so is an old stager or a friend, because friendships are very fickle things in fandom, and one day someone you call a friend might launch an attack on someone you despise, and the next day, launch an attack on *you* (I refer to you to that self-same mad bitch again).
The only way of making sure the lists, at least, are pleasant and safe is to apply the rules in exactly the same way to everyone - or to be honest and say, nope, we're a bunch of friends who want to keep the poopy heads out so we can bitch about them behind their backs. That's what my own list is about and I make no pretence about it.

Look, T, I'm not getting into this with you. You know as well as I do that I haven't unsubbed anybody over this so stop trying to make me feel like a hypocrite over it. The posts in question were minor stuff, nothing deserving of unsubscription - no death threats, name calling, or even any bad language.

Yes, people behaved inappropriately. And I have spoken to them about it and posted onlist about it. Am I going to do anything more than that? Probably not. But then that's my decision to make, given that it's my list and all.
